Development and application of stress-coping program for children using playtherapy techniques

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to develop the stress-coping training for children and to verify the effects of the stress-coping training on reducing daily stress and the strategies for coping with children¡¯s stress. Based on the results from the study, 10-session stress coping program was developed. This program included 4 steps for building an egalitarian relationship, understanding one¡¯s self, the coping skill process, and closing remarks. Then the researcher conducted the stress-coping program for 10 children from 31, March, 2003 to 12, April, 2003 at the elementary school in Sung-nam. The instruments of measurement were the daily stress scale and the stress coping scale. The research instruments used for pre-post-follow up tests. The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation and Repeated Measure ANOVA. The major findings of this study are as follows : 1. The stress-coping training reduced participant¡¯s daily stress in the following areas; parents, home environment, friends, studies, teacher & school and the surroundings stress. 2. The stress-coping training reduced participant¡¯s aggressive coping behavior and passive/avoidant coping behavior, and increased participant¡¯s active coping behavior and social support seeking coping behavior. The conclusions of this study are as follows : 1. The stress-coping training has significant effects on reducing the participant¡¯s daily stress in the following areas; parents, home environment, friends, studies, teacher & school and the surroundings stress. 2. The stress-coping training has significant effects on reducing the participant¡¯s aggressive coping behavior and passive/avoidant coping behavior. The stress-coping training has significant effects on increasing the participant¡¯s active coping behavior and social support seeking coping behavior.
